Discovering the Garden Squares of Paddington

Paddington is one of London’s most popular areas, with plenty to see and do and lots of green space to explore. The district is particularly well known for its garden squares – and in this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the ones to hunt down on your trip to the city…

What is a Garden Square?

A garden square is a type of communal green space or garden, typically found in a residential area. They are hugely popular throughout both London and the rest of the UK, not only as a way of providing green space to populous areas which might otherwise miss out, but also as a means of ensuring locals and visitors enjoying London hotels special offers are able to enjoy some rest and relaxation away from the hustle and bustle of big city life.

Cleveland Square

This square was first founded back in 1855, and has developed into a stunning, peaceful garden with 1.5 acres to explore while staying at the Chilworth. There’s a wide range of different landscapes to enjoy, including manicured lawns, trees which pre-date the park itself and gravel paths perfect for seasonal walks. The park is surrounded by remarkable homes, many of which have achieved a Grade II listing, and which help the park seem more like a private garden than a public park. There are lots of floral borders around the park, including wild varieties of poppy, foxglove and fern.

Bryanston Square

Built as part of the Portman Estate, Bryanston Square was developed between 1811 and 1821. The garden is surrounded by grand buildings to each side, as well as mature trees and a wide range of stunning flowers including camellia, azalea, rhododendrons and hydrangeas. There is a memorial drinking fountain situated in the park, which was installed in 1863, and a cast-iron water pump which dates from the early 19^th century. This is a great park to stroll around after a relaxing massage in Paddington. 

Sheldon Square

This square is one of the most unusual additions to our list, with an amphitheatre style, set within the Paddington Central estate. This stunning piece of green space is surrounded by a wide range of different lifestyle-oriented venues, including cafes, restaurants, gyms and lots of regular events throughout the year. After enjoying the best afternoon tea in London, this is a great place to while away a few hours or catch live music – and it’s all within easy reach of your hotel.

Paddington Green

The oldest part of Paddington and a noted area of conservation, Paddington Green has undergone many transformations over the years, including once being home to plentiful Georgian architecture. Only two of the houses which once stood in this spot still remain, situated on the east side of the parkland. Other key sights here include ancient remnants of Paddington, and nearby buildings include the St. Mary on Paddington Green Church, the City of Westminster College and the former site of Paddington Green Children’s Hospital, which has since been converted into an apartment building.
