Caroline, or Change

Playhouse Theatre / Until 6^th April 2019

This musical has only recently debuted in London’s West End. Written by Tony Kushner and Jeanine Tesori, Sharon D Clarke plays the titular Caroline, a black maid working for a white, Jewish family in Louisiana during the 1960s. The play details Caroline’s feelings of being trapped in her own life, and her attempts at coping with the stifling social conditions of the era. The play draws on Kushner’s own memories of childhood, and stays away from any clichéd attempts at providing a neat and tidy end to Caroline’s story. Yet amid the drama, there is a joyfulness to the writing and an intensity to the performances. Ideal for guests at The Chilworth Hotel Paddington looking for something a little different to see on stage this month.

Hamilton

Victoria Palace Theatre / Until 27^th April 2019

One of the most popular shows on the London stage right now, Hamilton has won rave reviews since it first arrived in London. Having previously dazzled audiences on Broadway, the story focuses on the tale of Alexander Hamilton, and it explores several narrative strands which will resonate with modern viewers. The play is largely concerned with the idea of legacy, and how what we do now may be perceived by those who follow. This is timely and entertaining viewing for visitors staying at a Paddington hotel who are eager to indulge in thought-provoking theatre.

Les Miserables

Queen’s Theatre / Until 29th June 2019

One of the most famous stage shows in the world, this musical adaptation of Victor Hugo’s novel centres on various characters during the French revolution. Whilst the setting is far from contemporary, many of the issues covered will cause you to pause and consider them in the context of our own society.
